Approaches to Learning (ATL)

Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills help students prepare for, and demonstrate learning through, meaningful assessment. These skills help students "learn how to learn." They provide a solid foundations for learning independently and with others. These skills are practiced across the curriculum and provide the students and staff a common language to articulate the process of learning.

Here are the five categories of ATL Skills and an example of that skill in practice.

Thinking Skills Consider ideas from other perspectives and points of view in a debate.
Social Skills Seek out criticism and feedback from others, including teachers and peers, and make informed choices about including it in one's work.
Communication Skills Use appropriate from of writing for an academic fieldwork report.
Self-management Skills Structure information appropriately in an oral presentation.
Research Skills Formulate provocative and relevant research questions for an investigation.
