Service Learning Requirements

It is a requirement of the IBMYP that students complete an element of service while participating in the program. At Martin Middle School, students must perform service learning events and record those activities using the ManageBac website. There are four types of service learning:

  • Direct Service Learning: person-to-person, face-to-face service projects in which the students’ service directly impacts individuals who receive the service from the students.
  • Indirect Service Learning: working on broad issues, environmental projects, or community development–projects that have clear benefits to the community or environment, but not necessarily to individually identified people with whom the students are working.
  • Research-Based Service Learning: gathering and presenting information on areas of interest and need–projects that find, gather, and report on information that is needed.
  • Advocacy Service Learning: educating others about topics of public interest–projects that aim to create awareness and action on some issue that impacts the community.

Activities that may fulfill the service requirements include, but are not limited to:

1. School-wide community service projects

2. Volunteering in the community

3. Cleaning school/neighborhood of trash

4. Gathering information & creating brochures/videos to raise awareness for world issues

5. Volunteering in food banks (Try 3 Square: http://www.threesquare.org/how-to-help/volunteer/) 

Sixth Graders: Complete 4 events

Seventh Graders: Complete 5 events

Eighth Graders: Complete 6 events

Students are also expected to reflect on their service. Students will post the activity in ManageBac along with the reflection, then the coordinator will approve and mark the service completed if all information has been submitted.
